Miss Marmalade

I have to admit, i have been here a lot within the past couple of weeks since my partner showed me this place.

So i can easily admit that I am in LOVE with this place. I have ordered the same thing every time (the herby scrambled eggs with a hash brown and avocado on the side), but it is amazing.. and their coffee is equally as good. and if there is a bit of a queue for the coffee, before you even sit down and you are waiting for a table they will often take your coffee order so it is ready for you as you sit down.

The staff are very friendly, and from what i can tell also work at other cafe’s around the brunswick area. There is one staff member and he always asks ‘what would you like for breaky?’ with an english/irish/scottish accent which is very cute…

I haven’t been to this place for lunch but seem to be always so excited when saturday comes i just go for ‘breaky’.. don’t worry one day i hope to go for lunch.

Tom Phat

This place has shocking service. I have been to this place a number of times and even though the food is amazing I have now come to expect that I will have to wait about 15 – 20 mins before I get asked if I would like a coffee..

I often go to Tom Phat for b’fast with a couple of friends and it offers an amazing asian inspired food such as the asian omelette or the Viet Fried eggs (which cannot be found in Vietnam FYI), is a great alternative than the usual eggs benedict.

The lunch and dinner menu is also modern inspired with an asian twist, and i often stick to the noodle dishes such as Horfun noodles stirfried w squid, shrimp, prawns & scallops, or even the  Crispy fried silken tofu w shitake, oyster mushrooms & bok choy in hot sour soup, if I am in one of my tofu moods.

This is a great place if you want to have a long chat to someone (as you will have the time to catch up before the staff realise someone new has sat down) or even to take a big group of people as they have a great large table

Although the service is bad, it is actually worth the visit. I even have to mention that the owners recently let the public decide if the restaurant should open on public holidays through a vote on Facebook ‘likes’…

Small Block

This cafe located up the Brunswick end of Lygon street offers a variety of different breakfast options with a twist. There are yummy baked beans, baked eggs, and even some Mexican themed options.

I ate the baked beans and my god. They were so much better than the Heinz ones that come from the can. And with goats cheese mixed in was maybe the yummiest thing I ate for that whole week. And my breakfast buddy was equally delighted with her Mexican inspired breakfast.

The coffee at this place is amazing. I would even go as far to say it’s the best in Brunswick.

Rumor has it that the owners of small block also own the Brunswick food store.

A let down of this place is that the waiter that served us didn’t tell us which coffee was the soy and the milk and also stuffed up our order, but another staff member was quick on her feet to fix his mistakes.

The place packs up quickly and sometimes you may need to wait, but it is well worth it.

Brunswick Foodstore

This place is a little gem just located on weston street in brunswick. So a perfect location if you want to grab something to eat before starting the weekly shop at Barkley square.

The menu in one word, wow. There are so many choices you cannot go wrong. But on my mind was one thing, the poached eggs on sourdough with rocket and Chorizo. It was simply just amazing.. the baked eggs and pancakes will be eaten on my second and third visit I think.

The decor of the place reminds me of a little country miss matched roadhouse with some city charm. It was sweet and it makes it feel homely. And the staff are sweet and friendly, which makes this place even better.

This place will become one of my brunswick favourites i think.

Collective Expresso

This little gem located on Cookson Street in Camberwell is one cafe that comes with high recommendations from the locals.

The breakfast menu will not make you feel one ounce of guilt after you have ordered. The price of the items on the menu is surprisingly very well priced considering the area where the cafe is located. The avocado and fetta toast is the most popular item that draws the people here, and of course it was my choice as well.

The large table in the middle makes everyone feel like they are at a big family dinner, and there is no such thing as feeling alone in this place. Although if you feel like you want to be alone there is a bar that you could sit at and try and hide from the sunshine coming through the big windows from the front.

The staff at this place are very friendly and it appears they all have very interesting personalities including the guy
the very creative mustache. And although it did take them a while to come and get our order, the food did come out within 10 minutes.

This is a great light filled place to catch up with a group of three or four.

Green Refectory

This little cafe on Sydney Road has become quite a place to be seen in the last year or so due to its location and the food on offer.

It is just a typical cafe that offers breakfast and lunch, but they way they create every meal makes it feel and taste like it was homemade. Even when all the tables are full (front, back and courtyard), they do offer takeaway salads, pies and sausage rolls, and amazing pide’s with chroizo and chickpea and anything else that you can imagine is in those little bundles.

The menu is on the board as you walk in so you can judge for yourself what you want as you squeeze through the line at the counter waiting to order. They have the basic’s such as scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, or something special such as the breakfast stack. And the fresh juices alone are worth just the walk or drive to this place.

This place is a great place to catch up with friends on a saturday morning to have a quick debrief about the week just past and the plans for the weekend.

St Jerome’s – The Resurrection

This place is one of my all time favourite Brunswick Bars.

It has everything you need. Beer, tunes, outside beer garden, food, and really cheap long necks.

I have found myself in the beer garden on many afternoons enjoying the afternoon sun and just wishing that the world would stop and just let me continue on relaxing and working on the tan for at least another fortnight.

The staff here have always been friendly and always seem like they enjoy working at the bar. Although when the place first opened i did celebrate my birthday here and one of the staff working on the night was well rude to everyone and had a nice snarl she showed to me and many of my friends that night, but she is now gone.

Thursday night is there mexican night, where you can get cheap taco’s ($3) and cheap mexican drinks like coronas ($5).

This place will be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys being relax and not being judged on what you are wearing.
